The father of modern roleplaying games has passed.

Today, Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) died. Compared to all others, Gygax is arguably the father of modern roleplaying games (RPGs), and is the name most roleplayers associate with the boom of paper/pencil RPGs from the 80s. It is not a great leap to attribute most modern RPGs, to include computer and console RPGs, to the fundamental rules behind D&D. In fact, we would be inclined to argue that Gygax, along with J.R.R. Tolkien (the father of modern fantasy), influenced the majority of fantasy in its current state, to include megaliths like World of Warcraft.

Fantasy RPGs have come a long way since Gygax and Arneson set pencil to paper to organize the ideas behind D&D, and they will continue to evolve thanks to his creativity and desire to build a flourishing community. Rest in peace, Gary Gygax.
